RISING DAMP

Blue Textured Wall
What is rising damp?

Rising damp is the name given the process of water in soil entering a building by traveling up through the pores in the brickwork – also known as capillary movement.

This is caused by a combination of factors including groundwater levels, the type of render used on the external surface of the building, the permeability of the render, the porosity of the brickwork and the amount of rainfall that falls on the roof.

Rising damp is one of the most common problems affecting homes across the UK. If left untreated, rising damp can cause serious structural damage to your home, including rot, mould growth and even collapse.

How to identify rising damp

The most obvious indicator of rising damp is the formation of a tide mark along the base of the wall. However, there are many other less obvious signs that you might notice such as wet patches on ceilings, mould growth on windowsills and doors and dripping taps.

Another indicator is if you are noticing signs of moisture on your skirting boards, Dampness can cause wood to expand and contract, which causes cracking and splitting. This can happen over time, even without exposure to water, but if you notice that the skirting boards around your property are beginning to crack or peel up, it would be worth having a professional come take a look. By taking care of these issues early, you can prevent any further damage.
