Rising Damp Treatment and Replastering:
A Case Study

Blue Textured Wall

Persistent damp patches began appearing on the walls in the lounge and dining room of this property, prompting the homeowners to seek expert advice. Classic symptoms of rising damp, such as peeling wallpaper, damaged skirting boards, and a musty odour, became more noticeable over time.

To resolve the issue, they contacted G Jones Plastering & Damp Proofing for a specialist assessment and solution.

Rising Damp in Lounge and Dining Room

Initial Assessment

Upon inspection, Gavin Jones, a PCA Qualified Technician with over 25 years of experience, confirmed the presence of rising damp in both rooms. He identified that the property's existing damp proof course (DPC) had been compromised, allowing groundwater to rise through the masonry.

Treatment Process

Step 1: Damp Proof Course Installation
Gavin began by installing a new chemical DPC using a damp proofing injection cream. This involved drilling holes at regular intervals along the affected walls and injecting the cream, which then dispersed to form a water-repellent barrier.

Step 2: Removal of Contaminated Plaster
The next crucial step was to remove all salt-contaminated plaster up to 1 meter above the signs of dampness. This is essential as these hygroscopic salts can continue to attract moisture even after the DPC is installed.

Step 3: Wall Preparation
Before replastering, Gavin applied a specialised salt inhibitor and primer to the exposed masonry. This additional layer helps to prevent any residual salts from migrating into the new plaster.

Step 4: Waterproof Plastering
For the replastering, Gavin used a specially formulated damp-resistant plaster. This type of plaster is designed to be breathable while also resisting moisture and salts, ensuring a long-lasting solution to the damp problem.

Step 5: Finishing Touches
Once the plaster had fully cured, the walls were given a smooth skim coat finish, ready for decoration.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates a thorough approach to resolving rising damp issues, combining effective damp proofing and professional waterproof plastering techniques. Gavin ensured that all contaminated plaster was fully removed, new treatments were correctly applied, and both rooms received a high-quality finish suitable for long-term protection. The result is an environment prepared for decoration and significantly improved building durability, with solutions tailored to prevent recurrence.
